Based on the shores of Sydney Harbour, Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) conducts marine research including Urbanisation, Biodiversity, Climate Change, Ocean Resources, and Marine Management.
In addition SIMS conducts outreach programs that bring this research to the community. Their school workshops introduce NSW students to scientific methods that are used by Marine Scientists and expose students to the wonders of the marine ecology.
Recently SIMS acquired a Polarizing digital microscope, a Dino-Lite AM4113ZT, to use in conjunction with its outreach programs. This microscope was chosen because of its image quality and its ability to reduce reflected glare from the water surface, allowing researchers and students a clear, magnified view of a marine specimen.
The image at right is of a mollusc which has absorbed die. The movement of the die simulates the feeding process of this specimen. The image captured by the Polarizing digital microscope can be projected through a digital projector providing a view of the image to a large group of students.
